Way, Way Hot

Kage Baker.

Much, much, much too hot. Too humid – 70% humidity at 11 PM, and not a storm in sight in the LA Basin? Render me down for my water, the desert is winning.

Chocolate cream pie and cold cucumbers for dinner. Iced coffee. Iced water. Hell, iced pickle juice; whatever fights off the heat malaise. Why do all my linen and cotton clothes suddenly weigh a ton? Why do the cats want to sit on my neck and radiate microwaves into my melting brain?

It’s been too many days at too high a temperature. No blog tonight – I need to take some evolutionary time and develop ways to deal with this. The weather has reduced me to an amoeba. Back as soon as I figure out how to produce pseudopods to type with …

That’s actually funny, what you said about the cat. It’s true, they seem happy to cuddle up in hot weather. ???? They are little heat machines, so welcome in midwinter, not so welcome during a heat wave. Anyway, I hope you find a way to cool off. You sound quite miserable. Maybe a trip to your local, air-conditioned art-cinema, for a day of indulgence…?

I have parked a small fan on the shelf above my desk, a wet wash cloth on my head, and I am assiduously practicing evaporative cooling. If you can’t wet down the cats to keep your neck cool, perhaps a wet washcloth across the back of the neck would ward off furry thermal generating units?

I’m not even in the hottest part of LA – it’s just that several days of heat have wrung me out. Gone are the days when I could dash about in two layers of wool, subsisting on iced chai and beer! On the other hand, Mark, I love the image of trying to use the cats as wet cloths – if I could just get them to sit still for it, I think they might even like it. Alas, cats are not known for their reasoned responses to logic.

In order to get some reasonable sleep, in the face of unreasonable amounts of work, Mrs S removed us to three nights in a hotel in Arcadia. Even its air conditioner, at full tilt could not make me cool enough, It was, however, heaven to Mrs. S who had been out side most of these days wrangling the planning for a “$Wedding of the $Century” to take place at the Huntington next weekend. We returned home yesternoon to massive suckyness.

Very wise of Chris, the move to a hotel. Alas, the continued heat just resets the entire problem every tie one goes outside – or even gets close to a window. It’s not that it’s just hot, it’s that it doesn’t cool down enough to recover from one day before the next begins broiling one. And the humidity makes it worse. I think I could take the hot temps – it’s not as though I am unused to them! – if it were not also so much damper than the atmosphere to which I am accustomed. I can’t breathe when it’s so sticky.
