One Year In

So, a year has passed without Kathleen. For the first time in my life, I am older than she, and everything feels off kilter. I’m having a more difficult time adjusting to this than anticipated, which is why you haven’t heard from me. I hope all the rest of you are doing well.

This was much easier when we lost Kage, because I had Kate with me. It let me concentrate on the good, bright memories of Kage – the stories, starting in high school, then on the trips to Faires, and at night when we all came together. I am the only one left who has knowledge of that full catalogue of characters and worlds. It’s more than slightly overwhelming. I’ve been crying and eating Easter candy all day.We must all adapt in our lives, but it’s not always a lot of fun. Onward!Whist we wait for good news from Vaughn at the amazing Virginia Kidd agency, I would suggest reading, or re-reading, some of Kage’s work. Please consider The Hotel Under the Sand. It’s a wonderful children’s book about terrifying loss, ongoing courage and hope, and ultimate success. If you (or your library) don’t have a copy, it’s available from Amazon. All comments will be happily received by all!

I must return now to Kathleen’s Zombie story: our heroes are about to make their escape from Los Angeles. Wish us all luck.

About Kate

I am Kage Baker's sister. Kage was/is a well-known science fiction writer, who died on January 31, 2010. She told me to keep her work going - I'm doing that. This blog will document the process.

My heart jumped when I saw the sender line in my morning emails. Thank you for carrying on Kage and Kathleen’s work and for giving us this update. My family is marking the six-month anniversary of a great loss and I can empathize with your feelings right now. Like the old gods, they won’t be really gone unless they are forgotten; these two strong, wonderful women will not be forgotten for a very long time. Their memories are a blessing to those of us who knew them.
